Terrapins men’s basketball guards Terrell Stoglin and Mychal Parker have both been suspended from the team for one year after violating the university’s student-athlete code of conduct, athletic department officials announced this morning.

Stoglin declared for the NBA Draft on Sunday night and Parker announced his intent to transfer, according to the statement. Stoglin reportedly failed three drug tests, according to a Washington Times report, and the university’s student-athlete code of conduct requires students be suspended for one year after three failed drug tests.

“Being a University of Maryland student-athlete carries a tremendous honor and responsibility,” Athletic Director Kevin Anderson said in a prepared statement. “As much as we appreciate the effort these two young men gave to the program this season, they were unable to live up to that responsibility. We’re disappointed, but hope they use this as a learning experience.”

Neither coach Mark Turgeon nor Stoglin immediately returned calls to their cell phones seeking comment. Athletic department officials did not return calls for comment.

Many supporters told Stoglin via Twitter this morning he was leaving too soon. In one of his responses, Stoglin said “wish I had the option” when referencing his decision to enter the draft.

Stoglin led the ACC in scoring this season after averaging 21.6 points per game. He was expected to be a cornerstone of what some believed would be coach Mark Turgeon’s first NCAA Tournament team in College Park.
