A day after a disheartening 4-3 loss to Wake Forest on Friday, the Terrapins men’s tennis team recovered to win an equally tough match against N.C. State on the road, 4-3.
On their first stop of a two-day tour through North Carolina this weekend, the No. 75 Terps (6-13, 3-6 ACC) lost the final match in their contest against the Demon Deacons (11-12, 2-6 ACC). Juniors Jesse Kiuru and Andy Magee secured the team’s only win in doubles, improving to 7-1 in conference play.
On Saturday, the Terps’ hopes of upsetting the No. 36 Wolfpack (16-8, 2-6 ACC) looked grim early. Despite winning the doubles point for the sixth time in the past eight matches, they trailed, 3-1. Wins by 24th-ranked pairing John Collins and Maros Horny and also Vlad Stefan and Tommy Laine were negated by N.C. State, however, which stormed back with wins at the three highest singles courts.
The Terps were not willing to give up on the match just yet, going on a rally of their own. Junior Jesse Kiuru kept the team’s hope alive with a straight-sets win at the fourth-highest court, and junior Tommy Laine won his sixth consecutive match at the sixth-ranked court to tie the match at three.
This left the deciding match point to the fifth-highest court, where junior John Collins won his third consecutive match at the fifth spot. After winning the first set, 6-4, Collins recovered from a second-set loss to clinch the victory for the Terps in the third set, 6-3.
The win should help the team in the national rankings as it enters its final home matches against No. 7 Duke on Friday and No. 21 North Carolina on Sunday.
The women’s team also played N.C. State, losing, 4-3, in the team’s final home match of the season.
After manhandling Wake Forest and snapping their seven-match losing streak Thursday at home, the No. 73 Terps (7-12, 1-8 ACC) dropped a heartbreaker to the Wolfpack (7-13, 3-6 ACC). The team lost on both the highest- and lowest-ranked courts in doubles to forfeit the point.
In singles, the Wolfpack won the first match on the first-ranked court, but the Terps stormed back, winning three consecutive matches on the second-, fourth- and fifth-ranked courts. N.C. State won the highest court to bring the score back to three apiece.
This left the third court to decide the match. Junior Vroni Van Berlo battled Ashley Miller in a three-set match, each going into a tiebreaker. Ultimately, Van Berlo lost the match in the third set, 7-6 (7-2).
The team will play at North Carolina on Saturday and Duke on Sunday.
