A University of Maryland student was killed and several others were injured in a car crash in Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon.
Zachary Garcia, one of the passengers in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to a report from Pennsylvania State Police. He was wearing a seatbelt, the report said.
A LinkedIn page for Garcia listed him as a senior finance major at this university.
Their car was traveling east on Interstate 70 in Fulton County, according to the report. Shortly after 2 p.m., the driver lost control of the car, the report said.
“Road conditions at that time were wet with active precipitation,” the report said.
The car, a 2007 Toyota Camry, went up an embankment before re-entering the highway, where it overturned multiple times and came to a stop on its roof, the report stated.
The driver and the three other passengers were transported to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Altoona, according to the police report. Each of those individuals — Andrew Carlon, Adam Caplan, William McCarthy Liebler and Andrew Minkin — is enrolled in classes at this university this semester, university spokesperson Jessica Jennings confirmed in an email.
Garcia, a 21-year-old from Cresskill, New Jersey, was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity — commonly known as FIJI — according to a tweet from this university’s Panhellenic Association.
As of Monday evening, a GoFundMe set up by the fraternity for Garcia’s funeral costs had garnered more than $30,000 in donations.
The investigation remains open.
