1. Doctors release Atlanta hospital patient who recovered from Ebola

Doctors from an Atlanta hospital released Amber Vinson, a U.S. patient who recovered from Ebola, according to CNN.

Vinson, 29, treated Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man who contracted the disease in West Africa and was hospitalized in Texas. Vinson and former Ebola patient Nina Pham are the only U.S. citizens to contract the virus in the country.

Doctors discharged Vinson on Tuesday, declaring her fully recovered from the virus, according to CNN.

Doctors are still overseeing others who might have contracted the virus, such as nurse Kaci Hickox.

Hickox was treating patients with Ebola in West Africa before returning to Maine. The state has filed a court order for a 21-day quarantine, according to CNN.

Hickox is fighting against this court order for quarantine.

Dr. Craig Spencer is the only U.S. citizen being treated for Ebola, according to CNN. Spencer developed a fever after returning from Guinea, where he was working for Doctors Without Borders.

President Obama is not discouraging U.S. involvement in West Africa to battle the Ebola outbreak, according to The Washington Post.

“We don’t just react based on our fears,” Obama said. “We react based on facts.”

2. U.S. increasing security at more than 9.500 federal buildings

Homeland Security Department officials announced security surrounding federal government buildings across the nation will be increased, according to ABC News.

The announcement comes one week after a man shot and killed a soldier guarding Ottawa’s National War Memorial.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson declared the need for improved security as “self evident.”

Johnson hasn’t said which buildings will have heightened security measures or what the new protocols will entail, according to ABC.

3. Maryland gubernatorial race tightens up in the final stretch

Maryland’s gubernatorial campaign is closer than analysts expected, according to The Washington Post.

A poll in the spring showed Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown 18 points ahead of his Republican competitor, Larry Hogan, an Anne Arundel County businessman.

In the past few months, Brown’s lead over Hogan has dwindled, falling to a one-digit lead, according to The Washington Post.

Brown still has strong support, especially among black residents in the state. If elected, Brown will be Maryland’s first black governor.

Elections are Tuesday, November 4.

4.ISIS members kill hundreds in Iraq

ISIS members abducted and killed hundreds of members of the Sunni tribe, Albu Nimr, according to CNN.

Members took about 50 tribe members from their homes in the Anbar province, located west of Baghdad, on Saturday, said tribal leader Sheikh Nabil Al-Ga’oud, according to CNN.

About 200 bodies were discovered in a mass grave outside of Hit in the providence, according to CNN.

ISIS also has conducted numerous public executions. Members marched 48 tribe members through Hit’s city streets before executing them, according to CNN.

Tribal leaders have not heard anything from the recent 50 abductees and assume they are dead.

Albu Nimr has a strong military force but is waiting for aid from the U.S. and approval from Iraqi government officials before responding to ISIS, according to CNN.

5. Pope supports evolution and Big Bang Theory

Pope Francis said evolution and the Big Bang Theory do not contradict the “intervention of God” in an address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, according to The Washington Post.

Members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences said they agree faith and scientific theories regarding the creation of our universe are not incompatible, according to The Washington Post.

“God is not … a magician, but the creator who brought everything to life,” Francis said. “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”

These beliefs are not necessarily new for the Catholic Church. For the past 60 years, the church has adopted theories of theistic evolution, based on a belief in a higher power.
