TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Terrapins football quarterback C.J. Brown suffered a concussion on the second quarter hit that knocked him from Saturday’s 63-0 loss at Florida State, coach Randy Edsall said.

Brown dropped back to pass on second down with 5:33 left, eluded a pass rusher and fired a pass up field to wide receiver Nigel King. Seminoles middle linebacker Christian Jones hit him from behind while nose guard Jacobbi McDaniel hit him in the chest with his helmet.

Brown stayed on the ground for a few minutes before he went to the locker room with trainers. The ESPN telecast reported he underwent X-rays. Edsall said Brown will be evaluated Sunday, and his status for the future is uncertain.

Edsall wouldn’t comment on the legality of the hit, but McDaniel spoke to the media after the game.

“I hope he is all right,” McDaniel said. “But I guess by the time I got there and when Christian Jones had him and he had let the ball go. By the time I got there and hit him, I feel anyone could have hit him that hard because when he threw the ball I just continued to go through the play.”

Sophomore Caleb Rowe replaced Brown. Rowe finished the game 9-of-17 for 119 yards. Brown was 6-of-14 for 82 yards at the time of his injury.

Center Sal Conaboy said he ran into Brown after the game, and the quarterback said he was going to be fine.

“It was tough,” Conaboy said. “Didn’t really know what was going on. Didn’t really see the hit, so I just kind of turned around, saw him on the ground. It was tough to see a friend down on the ground like that. It’s always tough when you see a teammate go down.”
