Mark Turgeon

Mark Turgeon has had some success with walk-ons during his three-year tenure as Terrapins men’s basketball coach and he’s looking to add to that track record this year.

For the first time in several years the Terps will host walk-on tryouts Oct. 1 and 2 at the Xfinity Center from 4 to 5 p.m. each day. The Terps are looking to add at least one player to their roster.

In Turgeon’s first season at the helm of the program he leaned on several walk-ons while reconstructing the Terps’ roster. Even as Turgeon added depth, walk-ons served as a big part of the team over the past several seasons. Forward John Auslander, originally a walk-on, was lauded as one of the Terps’ leaders the past two years and was recently hired as a graduate manager.

And last season, guard Varun Ram, who walked on after transferring from Trinity College, earned a scholarship saw time as a reserve guard early in the season.

Any full-time student at this university can try out as long as they have a physical and sickle cell test on file. There will be an informational meeting Friday at 3 p.m. Heritage Hall at Xfinity Center for any interested students.
