Quarterback Perry Hills is lifted onto a cart after sustaining an injury to the left leg late in the second quarter of the Terps’ 20-18 loss to NC State on Oct. 20.

Terrapins football quarterback Perry Hills will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, according to a release issued by the team today.

The true freshman suffered the injury late in the second quarter of the Terps’ 20-18 loss to N.C. State on Saturday. After throwing an interception, Hills was hit illegally from behind by a Wolfpack defender and had to be carted off the field.

“I am very disappointed for Perry,” coach Randy Edsall said in a statement. “I was proud of the way he stepped in this season and led our team. Perry is a great competitor and I know how strongly his teammates feel about him. We will do everything we can to support him through the rehab process.”

Hills is the second Terps quarterback who has been lost for the season with an ACL injury this year. Expected starter C.J. Brown tore his ACL in a non-contact drill in the offseason.

Sophomore Devin Burns — a converted wide receiver — and true freshman Caleb Rowe will compete to replace Hills under center. They’re currently the only two healthy quarterbacks left on the roster (Dustin Dailey and Ricardo Young are ineligible due to NCAA transfer rules).

Both quarterbacks came on in place of Hills last week. Burns completed 3-of-4 passes for 47 yards and Rowe completed 2-of-2 passes for 50 yards. Burns was also second on the team with 50 rushing yards.
