Coach Gary Williams, who led the Terps to their first-ever national championship in 2002, announced his retirement in 2011 after 22 years in College Park.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Friday afternoon that former Terrapins men’s basketball coach Gary Williams is a finalist for election to the Hall of Fame in 2014.

Williams, a Terps guard in the 1960s who coached at his alma mater from 1989-2011, rebuilt a fledging program in the early 1990s and led the team to the 2002 national championship. Williams — who also coached at American, Boston College and Ohio State — compiled a 668-380 record over 33 years as a head coach.

Famous for his intense sideline demeanor, Williams led the Terps to seven Sweet Sixteens and took them to 11 straight NCAA Tournament appearances form 1994-2004.

The Hall of Fame class of 2014 will be announced during the Final Four.
