Are costumes getting too skimpy?
If the movie Mean Girls has taught us anything, it is that Halloween is a time when girls can dress up like sluts and no one can say anything about it. Every year, Halloween comes and costumes become more revealing. It has come to a point where these costumes lack creativity and easily pass for lingerie. This brings a lot of attention to girls who wear these “outfits,” some of it unwanted. As a girl, it is fun to wear something flirty, but you will not see me walking around in a bra and boy shorts combo calling myself a bear because I put some costume ears on.
Should girls be walking around half naked? Should we be more aware of how we present ourselves or is that only a concern for past generations? I wanted to see what both the men and ladies of College Park thought of the dilemma. Angie Jain, a senior family science and human development student said, “Girls who wear slutty clothes on Halloween are girls who crave attention. Using a ‘holiday’ as an excuse to look like a slut doesn’t hide the secret of you being a slut. Women should maintain at least some level of class.”
Guys do many of these things to, yet it is acceptable for men to wander about in a “costume” of boxers and accessories. This never creates a problem but when girls try to show skin, they are automatically considered easy or sluts. Joel Cas, a senior business student, shares a similar opinion.
“Honestly, they do it for the attention,” he said. “It’s the only time of the year where people don’t judge them for being what they really are…sluts.”
Our current generation is a critical one, especially because we can voice our opinions over so many various social media platforms. I have dressed up this way in the past and it is fun — it brings instant attention. So the issue begs the question: Do we have to put on a jacket, or will everyone else have to find a way to accept the how women choose to dress, even if there is not a lot of material to be dressed in?
