Senior wide receiver Drew Weatherly missed the Terrapin football team’s practice yesterday and walked around with a large boot on his left foot. Coach Ralph Friedgen declined to comment on the injury or discuss any other injuries because “it’s game week.”

Weatherly, whose 19 career receptions are more than the next four receivers combined, is listed as the back-up “X” receiver on the Terps’ updated depth chart for Saturday’s game against William & Mary. Sophomores Isaiah Williams (one career catch) and Danny Oquendo (three career catches) are slated to start.

Ennis, for now

Friedgen said yesterday he’ll probably tab senior Dan Ennis as the Terps’ kicker for Saturday’s game. Ennis and sophomore Obi Egekeze had competed during fall camp for the starting job, jockeying back and forth every couple days.

“I think I’m gonna go with Ennis. I think I’ve seen about enough,” Friedgen said. “He’s been more consistent.”

Friedgen said he thinks the team has depth at the kicker position because Ennis and Egekeze have shown they can make long-distance field goals in practice. Ennis’ spot as the incumbent and his 25 career regular-season attempts at least partially contributed to the decision.

“Dan’s been there. He’s been in the game,” Friedgen said. “I think he’ll be a little more settled.”

Egekeze went down with an injury before last season, allowing Ennis to capture the starting spot. As the starter, Ennis went 17-for-25, but made only six of his final 14 attempts.

Friedgen left open the possibility that he could bring Egekeze into the game to kick a long field goal because Friedgen said Egekeze has a stronger leg and gets more height on the ball. But Ennis’ accuracy made the difference.

“Dan just makes more. That’s the bottom line,” Friedgen said. “It’s not a beauty contest.”
