Coach John Szefc argues with the umpire during the Terps’ 3-1 loss to Iowa at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium on April 11, 2015.
The NCAA suspended Terrapins baseball coach John Szefc for the first two games of the NCAA tournament due to an ejection in Sunday’s Big Ten title game, according to a release Wednesday.
In the top of the seventh inning during a 4-3 loss to Michigan, home plate umpire Jim Schaly ejected Szefc.
In Szefc’s absence, associate head coach Jimmy Belanger, who works with the pitchers, will assume the head-coaching role.
“I apologize for my actions during Sunday’s game, and I regret that I won’t be able to lead the team at the start of regionals.” Szefc said in the release. “I’m confident that Jim and our staff will have our team well prepared.”
Monday, the Terps earned a second straight berth in the NCAA regionals, which uses a double-elimination format. The No. 3-seed Terps open play Friday against No. 2-seed Ole Miss at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
