The Terrapins softball team lost both of its games on Saturday at the Maryland Miken Invitational.

The Terps started Saturday slate against Iowa (15-6), which ended in a 9-4 defeat. The team struck first after an RBI single from designated player Candice Beards in the first inning. Iowa pitcher Kayla Massey made up for conceding the earlier runs with a two-run double to give the Hawkeyes the lead.

After giving up three more runs in the fifth, the Terps inched closer with two runs in the sixth, which featured an RBI triple from infielder Lindsey Schmeiser. However, the Hawkeyes tacked on four runs in the top-half of the seventh to put the game beyond doubt.

During the afternoon game against Ohio State, the Terps drew first blood again with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth. However, the Buckeyes, down 4-1 going into the bottom-half of the fourth, scored eight unanswered runs over the next three innings to give them a commanding 9-4 lead.

The Terps then responded in a big way. Schmeiser, who had a homer earlier in the game, cut into the five-run deficit with one swing. Her grand slam surged the Terps’ five-run rally, which tied the game up at nine. The Buckeyes did not put their heads down, however, and a walk off RBI single ended the Terps’ day in disappointment.

The team will play one more game on Sunday against Binghampton (1-7).
