After a long offseason filled with coaching rumors, the first few members of new head coach Mike Locksley’s staff have been announced. A total of six coaches- four offensive, one defensive, and one special teams- were announced on Thursday, January 17.
Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach: Scottie Montgomery
The highest-profile addition to the Terps staff is new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Scottie Montgomery. Montgomery spent the last three seasons at the head coach at East Carolina University. Although his tenure with the Pirates ended on a sour note, he is heralded as a fantastic offensive mind, which was on display during his time at Duke University, where he served as offensive coordinator for two years, 2014 and 2015. Montgomery had other stints on the Duke coaching staff, as well as three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff.
Runningbacks Coach: Elijah Brooks
Dematha Catholic High School is known around the country as a football school. At the helm of their football team since 2011 is new Maryland runningbacks coach, Elijah Brooks. A handful of current Terps, including star running back Anthony McFarland, played under Brooks at Dematha. During his time as DeMatha head coach, Brooks posted a 72-20 record along with winning four conference championships. It has been rumored that Brooks had been offered roles on the Terps staff in the past, but had turned down those roles.
Tight Ends Coach: Mike Miller
The youngest of all of the new Maryland coaching hires is tight ends coach Mike Miller. This is Miller’s first full-time coaching stint, although he does bring a very decorated history. Following his playing career at UAB, Miller served as graduate assistants at both Clemson and Alabama. He was on the Tigers’ staff in 2015, then spent a year as offensive coordinator for Charlotte Christian high school in 2016, before spending the past two years as a graduate assistant at Alabama.
Offensive Line Coach: John Reagan
The Maryland offensive line will have a coach with over 25 years of coaching experience, with a lot of that experience being as an offensive coordinator. Before accepting the role as Maryland offensive line coach, John Reagan had been serving as the offensive coordinator at Penn. He has also spent four collective years as the offensive coordinator at Rice University and Kansas University.
Defensive Backs Coach: Cory Robinson
New defensive backs coach Cory Robinson is now starting his second stint on the Maryland football staff. In 2015 Robinson was the director of player personnel for the Terps. Following his time in College Park, Robinson served as the cornerbacks coach at three schools: Toledo, Temple, and Rutgers. Robinson’s job title also includes the duties of being the defensive pass game coordinator.
Special Teams Coordinator: John Papuchis
John Papuhcis comes to Maryland with five years of defensive coordinator experience. The Terps’ new special teams coordinator was the Nebraska defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2014, as well as being the UNC defensive coordinator for the past two seasons.
