Two Maryland men’s lacrosse players earned weekly honors Tuesday, with midfielder Roman Puglise being named Big Ten defensive player of the week, and attackman Logan Wisnauskas making the USILA Division I team of the week.
In Maryland’s first of two wins last week, Puglise set a then-career high for ground balls with five, and also caused one turnover against No. 16 Colgate. His effort contributed to the stingy defensive effort against the Raiders, holding them to six goals after they had averaged 14 going into the contest.
The midfielder then upped his career-high by collecting seven ground balls against Navy, helping the Terps go 18-for-26 on faceoffs during the 14-9 win over the Midshipmen.
“He’s as tough and most competitive kid as you’ll find [and a] great athlete,” coach John Tillman said after the Navy game.
Wisnauskas recorded hat tricks against both Colgate and Navy to help keep the Terps undefeated start alive.
It took Wisnauskas just four shots to tally three goals against Colgate, and he also dished out two assists in the 11-6 win. The redshirt sophomore caused two turnovers and scooped up five ground balls, giving the attack extra possessions to score on.
Against the Midshipmen, Wisnauskas set a new career high in assists (five) and points (eight). He worked well in coordination with fellow attackman Louis Dubick, finding Dubick for four of his five assists. Wisnauskas contributed to the first line of the attack unit that scored or assisted on 11 of the 14 goals against the Midshipmen on Saturday.
Showing more of an all-around game this year, Wisnauskas’ 15 goals and 12 assists give him a team-high 27 points through five games. Last season, Wisnauskas tallied 15 assists in 18 games.
Tillman lauded Wisnauskas’ abilities as both a scorer and a distributor after the game against Navy, which helped land the attackman on the national team of the week alongside nine other players.
