When the Terrapins wrestling team celebrated Senior Night on Sunday, 184-pound Jimmy Sheptock and 197-pound Christian Boley — both former ACC Champions — starred as the team topped American. During last year’s event, administrative assistant and former Terps wrestler 174-pound Josh Asper continued a dominant run, closing out his regular-season career with a victory in a win over George Mason.
The Terps aim to spoil George Mason’s Senior Night tonight in Fairfax, Va., but they’ll send out a vastly different lineup than they did this time a year ago.
Four starters on this year’s team — 285-pound Spencer Myers, 157-pound Ben Dorsay, 174-pound Ty Snook and 125-pound Billy Rappo — redshirted last season, while fellow starter 133-pound Tyler Goodwin hadn’t enrolled at this university yet.
This year’s Terps are streaking late in the season and might be contenders to capture the ACC Championship, which eluded them last season. But before they set their sights on March 8, the Terps (8-8) will need to get through the Patriots (6-14) tonight.
“You look at our year this year, there’s no such thing as complacency,” coach Kerry McCoy said. “We can’t take anything for granted. We have to go out there and wrestle as hard as we can every time we go out there.”
The Patriots recorded four victories in their first five matches this season but haven’t been able to replicate that success since. They have dropped four consecutive matches, including 34-3 and 36-3 defeats in their past two outings.
The only Patriot to earn a victory in last weekend’s loss against Virginia was 141-pound sophomore Sahid Kargbo, who earned his 19th win of the season.
Kargbo, a three-time Greco-Roman state champion in high school, spurned an offer from the Terps to compete at George Mason. Kargbo will likely challenge 141-pound Shyheim Brown, who spent a few weeks in November ranked in the nation’s top-20.
“We were just talking to [Brown],” McCoy said. “He’s going to have one of the tougher matches. We need to make sure he’s ready to go. But again, he’s looking at winning an ACC Championship, but he can’t overlook this guy.”
With this weekend’s match doubling as George Mason’s Senior Night, the Terps expect a highly charged environment.
“It’s always emotional for the teams,” Myers said. “Can’t think about. Got to block it out mentally. Block it out and not focus on what they’re doing, just focus on what I got to do to ultimately win.”
In a season that began unevenly, the Terps have won three matches in a row and four of their last five. Still, they likely can’t afford a letdown tonight when they visit a struggling George Mason team.
“[They’re] definitely not the strongest team,” 149-pound Frank Goodwin said. “But it’s good to never [be] going into a place thinking it’s going to be an easy win. This is college — anybody can beat anybody. Anybody can have a hot day or a cold day.”
