The Terrapin women’s basketball team showed its joy on national television tonight after finding out it was awarded a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Terps (30-3) had been penciled in by many as the No. 2 seed in the Spokane, Wash., region, behind likely No. 1 Stanford (30-3). But the NCAA tournament committee changed all that by placing the Terps as the No. 1 seed in the region.
The Terps’ reaction was captured by ESPN during the selection show, as was Stanford’s. And while the Terps jumped for joy, the Cardinal looked rather melancholy about the verdict that left them as the No. 2 seed in the Spokane region. The No. 3 seed in the region is Baylor.
The Terps will not play until Sunday, March 23, where their first round opponent is set to be No. 16-seed Coppin State (22-11). They will play the first two rounds in College Park, before heading out to Spokane if they advance.
Last season, the Terps fell short as a No. 2 seed against No. 7-seeded Mississippi in the second round.
The other No. 1 seeds are North Carolina (30-2) in New Orleans, Connecticut (32-1) in Greensboro, N.C., and Tennessee (30-2) in Oklahoma City.
