With the recent elections signaling a potential reversal of Gov. Martin O’Malley’s progressive agenda, students at this university are speaking out against policies dictated by out-of-touch senior lawmakers.
Specifically, these students are raising their voices to expand our renewable energy standards. According to environmentalists, the path chosen by many current Republicans and climate-passive Democrats will lead to continued sea level rise, increased air pollution and agricultural deficiency.
Current lawmakers might not live to see the detrimental effects of such decisions. It will be left to us, the youth of today and tomorrow, to fix our predecessors’ mess — far, far too late.
Our governor-elect, Larry Hogan, stated “humans have something to do with” climate change, and questions “how much and what we can actually do to solve the problem.”
Our generation has the answer: It is time for clean renewable energy to blanket the natural gas and coal industries.
Students on this campus will not stand for the deterioration of our environment, our health and quality of life. With or without the help of our legislators, we will continue to fight for an increase in the renewable portfolio standard until clean energy dominates the Northeast. There is no time to waste.
