The Terrapins softball team dropped both games on the second day of the Florida Atlantic Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla.
After defeating South Carolina on Friday, the Terps fell to the Gamecocks, 8-2, on Saturday afternoon.
A throwing error by infielder Corey Schwartz allowed South Carolina to score three runs in the third inning to get the Gamecocks on the scoreboard first.
South Carolina made the most of its scoring opportunities, with seven of its eight runs coming with two outs.
The Terps, who lost for the seventh time this season, weren’t as fortunate when it came to producing the big hit in clutch situations. The Terps stranded runners in every inning, and left the bases loaded trailing 3-2 in the fourth. They had nine hits, including three from outfielder Amanda McCann and two from outfielder Erin Pronobis, but squandered opportunities left them with only two runs scored.
Once the Gamecocks forced pitcher Brenna Nation to exit the game, they immediately took advantage, scoring five runs in the final three innings to break the game open. Nation, who allowed two earned runs in four-plus innings, pitched well for the Terps. It was defensive miscues that allowed South Carolina to score many of their early runs.
Pitcher Hannah Dewey’s struggles in the circle continued as she allowed three hits, two walks and one run while recording only one out. Pitcher Jaymi Bautista-Geiger finished the game, giving up two runs in two innings.
The Terps didn’t produce much offense in the second game either, falling 4-0 to Florida Atlantic.
The three runs FAU scored in the third inning was all the offensive production they needed. The Terps finished with only four hits, two of them coming from McCann.
The Terps’ best scoring chance came in the fifth inning when Schwartz made it to third. After infielder Julie Strange fouled out and outfielder Sarah Calta struck out, Schwartz was stranded.
