Grease fire displaces 12

A grease fire in the university’s Leonardtown Community displaced 12 residents and drew six fire trucks at about 11:30 last night.

Witnesses said flames from a stovetop donut-making attempt ignited the cabinets above the stove.

“She pulled the lid off the pan, and flames shot up out of it,” neighbor Julie Lokitis said. “She just pulled the fire alarm and ran.”

Fire officials at the scene told residents the damage was minimal.

“The kitchen is pretty torn up and there is a lot of water damage, but everything is okay,” a firefighter told residents.

Though little was harmed in the fire, residents of the apartment and the apartment below were found alternate housing for the evening because of water damage.

“Everything in the common room is soaked,” he said. “The Playstation is just destroyed.”

Radio personality, dance coach swap jobs

Radio personality Jimmy Alexander of Mix 107.3’s Jack Diamond Morning Show swapped jobs yesterday with University of Maryland Dance Team coach Annie Kennedy.

With the help of the team’s assistant coaches, Alexander led the 6:30 a.m. practice at Comcast Center.

In the 20-woman squad’s flurry of leaps, turns, fouettŽs and pirouettes, he had no idea what he was doing, said dance team member Sarah King.

“But he had a lot of fun, I think,” she said. “He started to get the hang of it at the end.”

Alexander even passed some of his less formal dance knowledge on to the team.

“He taught us some of his hip-hop moves, I guess you could call it,” King said, giggling. “He was trying to show us the moves he does at the clubs. We were, like, ‘I don’t know about that.'”

Meanwhile, Kennedy sat beside Jack Diamond in the radio station’s studio.
