Terrapins football starting quarterback Perry Hills will miss Saturday’s game against Indiana with mononucleosis, and Caleb Rowe will replace him under center.
Rowe has started three games and played in eight total. He is tied for first in the nation in interceptions thrown with 15. This will be Rowe’s first start since Oct. 3 against Michigan.
Hills started the Terps’ past five games, and seven in total. While he’s struggled to throw the ball, averaging 140.7 passing yards per game, he leads the team with 77.4 yards per game on the ground.
Shane Cockerille will likely back up Rowe. The dual-threat quarterback moved back under center midseason but has attempted one pass this season.
Freshman quarterback Gage Shaffer, who hasn’t played this season, was suspended earlier this week and graduate transfer Daxx Garman had season-ending shoulder surgery earlier in the year.
The other quarterback dressed for the Terps is Minnesota transfer Dexter Foreman.
In other injury news, wide receiver DeAndre Lane will miss the contest with a mid-foot sprain.
Backup running back Ty Johnson, meanwhile, is a game-time decision. If he can’t play, fullback Kenneth Goins Jr. and running back Joe Riddle will back up starter Brandon Ross.
Last week’s starter, Wes Brown, was suspended indefinitely Monday for violating the student-athlete code of conduct.
