A diverse mix of university groups came together Tuesday night to present students with an inside look at the experiences of different races growing up during the Civil Rights era.

Paul Pumphrey, a community activist and former member of the Black Panther Party, told his story of growing up black in Baltimore during a time when segregation existed not only in schools but also in shopping malls, swimming pools and fitness centers.

To contrast Pumphrey’s perspective, Felipe Luciano of the Young Lords Party shared his tale of growing up black and Puerto Rican in New York surrounded by people of all different backgrounds and races. The event, attended by about 100 people, was titled “Different Color, Same Struggle.”
