That’s a wrap

There are almost 9,000 students living in 32 residence halls on the campus and Dining Services is responsible for feeding each one roughly twice a day. With all those students relying on either the North or South Campus Diner for food, The Diamondback asked Assistant Director Bart Hipple just how much these students are consuming.

Enjoy the occasional basket of chicken strips? Well, you’re not alone. In total, 3,494 orders of chicken strips were ordered last month. Since there are three strips of chicken in a basket – four if you’re lucky – that means students ate roughly 10,000 pieces of chicken.

And of course, with one of the busiest stations at either diner, you can’t be surprised that a lot of students order quesadillas for a meal — but in February, Dining Service officials reported that 9,675 were made. That’s a lot of cheese.

If you ever have enough time to actually stand in line for a sandwich between classes, chances are you’re getting a Buffalo Chicken Wrap. Whether it’s with ranch or blue cheese, fried or grilled — the wrap is an addictive classic. This may be why those great sandwich ladies behind the counter collectively made almost 18,000 orders in the month of February alone. God bless them.

But if you’re telling yourself there is no item on the menu which sells more than the classic Buffalo Chicken wrap – well you’re wrong. There’s one item students get for lunch, dinner, late night and even breakfast if they’re feeling a little hungover and that’s a slice of pizza. The two diners on campus sold roughly 25,000 slices of pizza combined. Assuming that there are eight slices of pizza in a diner pie then that means the on-campus student population had around 3,000 pizza pies just in February alone.

Maybe there’s a new reason to fear the turtle.
