Coach Mark Turgeon watches in the second half of the Terps’ 69-67 loss to Duke on Feb. 15, 2014 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Terrapins men’s basketball freshman center Trayvon Reed won’t enroll in school after he was arrested Wednesday night in College Park.

The Baltimore Sun first reported the story.

Reed was expected to be a part of a recruiting class ranked by several media outlets as of in the nation’s top-10 hauls. A 7-foot-2 center, Reed was lauded as a promising shot blocker and defender with raw athleticism.

Reed was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of assault, both of which were committed on a police officer, university police spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas said.

An on-duty university police officer dressed in plain clothing saw Reed taking items from a convenience store in the 8600 block of Route 1, Hoaas said. The officer identified himself and confronted Reed, who resisted the arrest. Reed was charged with assaulting the officer. The officer did not receive any life threatening injuries, Hoaas said.

“Trayvon failed to meet the standards that are required by the University of Maryland athletics department,” coach Mark Turgeon said in an athletic department press release.

Reed was also charged with theft under $100 and resisting arrest.

“I regret that I was unable to meet the responsibilities that were expected of me from Coach Turgeon and the University of Maryland,” Reed said in the release.

Reed, who had been sidelined during much of the summer with a broken ankle, is from Georgia and played his senior high school season in New Jersey. He was expected to help fill the void in the front court left by Charles Mitchell and Shaquille Cleare, two Terps big men who transferred in the offseason.

Instead, the Terps will look to incoming Slovak freshman center Michal Cekovsky, sophomore Damonte Dodd and senior Jon Graham to man the paint.

“We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to Coach Turgeon and the Maryland basketball program,” Daniel Moore, Reed’s stepfather, said in the same release. “We regret that Trayvon has to leave Maryland and miss out on this great opportunity.”
