A Beltsville man was fatally shot about two miles from the campus early yesterday morning on University Boulevard, said a spokesman for Prince George’s County Police.
Police found Roberto Tario, 23, of the 13100 block of Oriole Drive shortly before 3 a.m. with a single gunshot wound to the upper body, according to a news release. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Preliminary police reports indicate Tario and two other people were getting out of a car when the gunman fired several shots from a dark-colored sport utility vehicle near the 2100 block of University Boulevard.
Tario does not appear to have any connection to the campus, said Cpl. Clinton Copeland, a spokesman for county police.
Police said they do not have a lead or motive in the case.
“The investigation is still ongoing, and hopefully somebody will call us,” Copeland said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the county’s homicide unit at (301) 772-4925. A reward of $25,000 is offered for tips that lead to an arrest.
