Tim Horsmon

Terrapins volleyball coach Tim Horsmon resigned as Terrapins volleyball coach and will take the same position at Dayton, a team spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

Horsmon joined the Terps as coach in 2008 after holding the same position with the Flyers from 2003-07.

“I am very excited to once again be University of Dayton’s volleyball coach, and I want to thank Tim Wabler and Mike Kelly for the opportunity to return,” said Horsmon in a Dayton press release. “Dayton is a very special place. From a volleyball perspective, it was a great situation when I was there before, and following from afar as I have, I know it’s even better now with the Cronin Center and the new performance center that is coming.”

After compiling a 225-93 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances prior to coaching the Terps, Horsmon was brought in to the program after longtime coach Janice Kruger retired.

Horsmon was largely unable to duplicate his prior success, as the Terps failed to qualify for an NCAA Tournament and posted a 79-114 record.

Despite nabbing several high-level recruits — such as outside hitters Mary Cushman and Ashleigh Crutcher and middle blocker Adreene Elliott — the Terps failed to produce consistently under Horsmon, and they never finished with a winning record in ACC competition. The Terps had their best conference record in 2010 when they went 10-10.

The Terps will look to fill the vacancy left by Horsmon with the move to the competitive Big Ten looking this summer. Internally, assistant coaches Audrey Ludwig and Michael Shearer both have coaching experience. Ludwig spent three seasons as coach at Division III Hamline University before joining Horsmon’s staff in 2011, and Shearer spent time as interim head coach at West Alabama in 2012.

Athletic director Kevin Anderson said the Terps will begin a “national search” for their new coach.

“I want to thank Kevin Anderson and [senior associate athletic director] Lori Ebihara for their support during my six years at Maryland,” Horsmon said in a release. “I enjoyed working with so many dedicated and committed people who contributed to the program.”
