Terrapins catcher Kevin Martir was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List on Friday, given out annually to the best college catcher.
Martir was one of 43 catchers named to the initial watch list, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced.
The sophomore is batting .238 with a .345 on-base percentage in seven games. Last season, he batted .279 with a .345 on-base percentage in 50 games.
Martir sat out the Terps’ three-game series with Massachusetts last weekend due to a strained hip flexor, but coach John Szefc said Martir would play this weekend at No. 2 Florida State.
The ACC had six catchers named to the watch list, which puts it in a tie with Conference USA for most in the country.
The winner will be announced on June 26.
