Behind a season-high 19 hits, the Terrapins baseball team cruised to an 13-4 win over Ohio State on Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium.
Center fielder Kengo Kawahara, who entered the game hitting .169, led Terps from the nine-hole going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Every starter notched at least one hit in the team’s second straight victory.
After suffering his first loss of the season May 1 against Indiana, right-hander Mike Shawaryn rebounded with seven innings of two-run ball.
While the Buckeyes (33-14, 12-7 Big Ten) outscored the Terps (34-16, 12-7), 2-1, after two innings, coach John Szefc’s squad dominated its opponent the rest of the way.
The Terps tied the game in the third inning when second baseball Brandon Lowe drove in shortstop Kevin Smith with an RBI double. Three batters later, right fielder Anthony Paper put the team ahead with a sacrifice bunt.
Leading 5-2 in the fifth, the Terps broke the game open with three more runs. After an RBI single from left fielder Tim Lewis, Kawahara knocked in two more with a single through the left side.
The Terps sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and tacked on five runs to blow the game open. Right-hander Bobby Ruse and right-hander Mike Rescigno, making his third appearance of the year, came on to limit the Buckeyes in the final two innings.
Shawaryn matched his single-season wins record from last season with his 11th victory.
