Officials from Student Entertainment Events announced yesterday that Rebecca Black, the 13-year-old singing sensation from California, will be headlining this year’s Art Attack.

Organizers of the event, scheduled for May 6 at Byrd Stadium, had hoped to attract a big-name artist with instant name recognition and huge hits to his or her name.

Black emerged as a major player in the pop music scene in recent weeks, taking the world by storm with her debut song “Friday.” SEE officials said she was just the artist they had in mind.

“Although we considered many, many artists — including Lupe Fiasco, Bob Dylan and Katy Perry — we were just blown away by Rebecca,” SEE President Laura Brant said. “Not only is she a truly gifted singer, but her success at such a young age should serve as an inspiration for everyone lucky enough to attend her performance, a message that anyone, no matter their age, can achieve their dreams. She’s truly moved me, and I want the entire university to experience that.”

The performance will not be your typical concert.

Reached just before her bedtime last night, Black stated she will be previewing some of the tracks on her soon-to-be-released album — tentatively titled Weekdaze — at the concert.

“This is the first time I’ve been allowed to stay up past 9 o’clock,” she said, “and I wanted to do something special for all y’all Terps.”

Black is not the only one excited: Students are, too. After hearing the news, Student Government Association President Steve Glickman — who said he needed a moment to process the information — stated, with tears in his eyes: “I think I can speak for all students at this university when I say that ‘We, we, we so excited. We so excited.'”
