The university approved funds earlier this month to continue a $6 million construction project on the women’s Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex — money that will add new locker rooms, concession stands and training facilities.
The additional construction for the stadium, which is located on Paint Branch Drive, will cost about $2 million and should be complete by September, said Carlo Colella, director of architecture, construction and engineering.
In the construction plan, two buildings will be added to the stadium. The first building, which has already been constructed, will house new concession stands and bathrooms for spectators.
The adjacent building will house the teams’ workout facilities and locker rooms. Colella said the university has approved plans to start construction in the next few weeks.
The university is adding to the complex so both the field hockey and lacrosse teams can have a central area to get ready for games. When preparing for games now, both teams use the basketball locker rooms in Comcast Center and use the workout facilities in the Varsity Teamhouse.
“It’s going to be nice to have a place where we can go inside during halftime,” said Andrew Griffiths, the field hockey assistant coach.
The stadium opened in 2003, adding 1,000 seats for fans to watch the games. That summer a $4 million playing surface was installed. Colella said the current construction will not interfere with the teams’ home games.
Before the stadium was built, games were played on a field behind the Biology-Psychology Building, which was turned into a football practice field.
