A county judge ruled sophomore Alexander Song, who is charged with eight misdemeanors for allegedly threatening a “shooting rampage” on the campus last month, fit to stand trial.
The 19-year-old from Fulton will travel to Upper Marlboro for another hearing May 15, but a trial date has not yet been set.
“I feel much better than I did,” Song said in court yesterday.
On March 10, Song allegedly posted the following on Reddit.com and Omegle.com (a one-on-one anonymous text or video chat site): “I will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus,” “stay away from the Mall tomorrow at 1:30” and “hopefully I kill enough people to make it to national news,” according to University Police. Officers found Song unarmed the following morning outside of Cumberland Hall.
Song was placed in psychiatric care following his arrest. He passed a mental health evaluation and was released from psychiatric care but is not permitted to leave his home other than for medical purposes, Judge Patrice Lewis said.
The Office of the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County charged Song with disturbing the orderly conduct of the activities, administration or classes; misuse of electronic mail; false statement; false statement to a public official; two charges of misuse of telephone facilities and equipment; and disturbing the peace.
Song is also prohibited from setting foot on the campus, according to University Police spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky.
Steven Vinick, Song’s attorney, said he was “pleased” with how the case was proceeding, but declined to comment further.
