Rumors! Supermodels! Oh yeah, and magic!
Such is the life of David Copperfield, the magician who the Library of Congress officially named a living legend.
Some of his most famous tricks include flying, walking through the Great Wall of China and making the Statue of Liberty and audience members vanish. (He made 10 people disappear and reappear last week in Virginia, according the Richmond Times-Dispatch.)
The magic’s only half the story. He dated mega-model Claudia Schiffer for six years, but rumors circulated that their relationship was fake and he paid her to appear as his girlfriend. He acknowledges the rumor on his website and makes a crack on it: “Anyone who believes this is missing the gene for common sense,” he writes. He’s also been victim of rumors — some bizarre and some not — claiming he’s gay and that Russian mafia held his equipment hostage.
According to a Copperfield release, he’s one of the 13 best-paid entertainers in the world, which is why the admission price to this weekend’s performance at the Warner Theatre isn’t one bit surprising.
David Copperfield performs tonight and tomorrow at the Warner Theatre. Admission is $33.50 to $58.50. Call (202) 783-4000 for times.
