David Katz, the gunman who police say killed two and left 11 injured at a video game tournament in Florida, was previously a University of Maryland student, according to a university spokesperson.
Katz, who police say killed himself after the shooting, was enrolled at this university beginning September 2014 and not registered for classes this semester, said Katie Lawson, this university’s chief communications officer, in a statement.
The 24-year-old, who was an environmental science and technology major, did not live on the campus, Lawson said. Local FBI and ATF officials are investigating a home near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor with ties to Katz.
“Our community grieves for the families of those who lost their lives in yesterday’s horrific shooting in Jacksonville. When our community was directly impacted by the shooting in Annapolis this summer, I said that more than silent reflection is needed to end the epidemic of gun violence in our country, and I will say that again today,” university President Wallace Loh said in a statement.
A 2011 graduate of Hammond High School in Howard County, Katz was a competitive player of the Madden NFL video game who’d won several tournaments in the past. The Los Angeles Times reported that Katz had been eliminated from the tournament before he opened fire.
