County police are searching for a man a female student saw masturbating on a Shuttle-UM bus as he sat across from her yesterday afternoon, according to documents provided by police.
According to a police report, the man boarded the bus with the woman at the Stamp Student Union, sat across from her, and attempted to strike up a conversation, saying “cold, cold” before he exposed himself and began masturbating.
The female student moved to the front of the bus and notified the driver, and the man exited the bus at some point on the route, police said. The report also notes the bus driver noticed the man board the bus without a university identification at Stamp Student Union.
Another woman also boarded the bus at one point, and the student advised her not to head toward the back of the bus, where the man was sitting. The student rode to the end of the route, at the Student Union, where a Transportation Services supervisor was notified. A camera was mounted on the bus, and the supervisor was able to provide videotape of the incident to police.
A photo of the man will be released to the public later today, said Maj. Kevin Davis, the commander of District 1, where College Park lies. He added that the man appeared to be a black man in his 30s, and police do not believe he has any connection to the Peeping Tom incidents downtown, where a man was also observed masturbating. The Peeping Tom has consistently been described as a white man in his 20s.
Police do not believe the man is a student.
“We’re diligently investigating this case and based on that, partnered with the campus police and the shuttle bus folks, and we received full cooperation,” Davis said. “The last part we need is for people to take a look at this photograph.”
Police were unable to provide the photograph to The Diamondback because of technical difficulties, but a photograph will be published in tomorrow’s edition and today on www.diamondbackonline.com.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the District 1 investigative unit at (301) 699-2601.
University Police and Transportation Services officials could not immediately be reached for comment late last night.
