We all know getting anywhere in this weather is close to impossible; no one wants to leave the comfort of their homes! While getting to class has been difficult, it is beyond me how people have made it out for standard University of Maryland syllabus week festivities. The cold has not muffled the rowdy noises of Route 1 and surrounding neighborhoods. While I commend everyone for their valiant efforts on maintaining a balanced social life, some outfits have me shaking my head.

Open-Toed Heels

I have no idea who you are or why you would do this. It was snowing last night. Heels alone are a death wish in the ice, but open-toe as well? Very ambitious. Instead, opt for a boot with a low wedge and traction on the sole. If you want height, try to find a thicker heel with more coverage to keep your toes warm!

No Jacket

Stolen jackets are a real concern when going out, but that doesn’t mean you should leave it at home. Going out with absolutely no coverage is borderline insanity. If you want the warmth but not the bulk look for lined sweatshirts, cover-ups or leather jackets. These are still uncomfortable to carry around but can easily fit under your arm or over your bag! One night out (especially in College Park) is not worth the hypothermia.

Bare Legs

Skirts, shorts and cut out leggings should be thrown to the back and bottom of your closet. Jeans, pants and thick leggings make you look just as good (and sane) in the cold. Accessorize more or wear nice boots, but please leave the bare legs for when the temperature gets above freezing.

The Tank/Crop Top

These are popular go-to pieces when going out, weather permitting. But when wind chill puts us at -5 degrees, it’s time to add some sleeves and longer tops. Layer with sheer blouses and bandeaus. You can also experiment with lower necklines and ¾ sleeves. There are always other options — do not sacrifice any bit of warmth!
