Wide receiver Stefon Diggs races upfield during the Terps’ 45-21 loss to Stanford in the Foster Farms Bowl at Levi’s Stadium on Dec. 30, 2014.

The Minnesota Vikings selected Terrapins football wide receiver Stefon Diggs in the fifth round of the NFL draft Saturday afternoon.

Diggs, who finished fourth all-time in receptions and second in program history in receiving yards, opted to forgo his senior campaign with the Terps to enter the draft. He was selected with the 146th overall pick, the first Terp taken in this year’s draft.

Former Terps cornerback Dexter McDougle was the lone Terps players taken last year when the New York Jets took him with the 80th pick.

The Gaithersburg native opted to stay in his home state and play with the Terps as the No. 13 overall recruit in the nation, despite receiving offers from some of the premier college teams in the country.

He joins wide receivers Mike Wallace, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jarius Wright and Charles Johnson on the Vikings and should have a chance to compete for a job right away. Minnesota’s starting quarterback is Teddy Bridgewater, who will be entering his second season out of Louisville.
