A car crashed in front of Eppley Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon after Prince George’s County police officers pursued a male suspect who drove onto the campus, according to a University Police press release.
An Edmonston police officer attempted to stop the black Jeep earlier in the afternoon because it matched the description of a car connected to a series of robberies and burglaries in the area, Prince George’s County Police spokeswoman Cpl. Maria McKinney said.
The driver crashed his car, and Prince George’s County police officers arrested the suspect. A second male fled the scene on foot, police said.
Security monitors, who work from the university’s security operations center, tracked the suspect who fled on foot using surveillance cameras around the campus. University police officers arrested the suspect in less than a minute and turned him over to Prince George’s County police, said University Police Spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas.
Police also recovered two handguns from the Jeep, McKinney said. Prince George’s County Police detectives believe this incident could aid in closing “a string of robberies that have been going on” in the area, McKinney said.
