It’s that time of year again — back to classes, group projects and dining hall food. But, like most College Park veterans know, there’s a bright side to being back in school.

Every year there is a number of events and fun things to do in and around College Park, some of which are even free. So for newbies and those who have forgotten, here’s a breakdown of places to find things to do when you have downtime, get bored or just want to procrastinate.

SEE: www.see.umd.edu

The Student Entertainment Events hosts a slew of events on the campus year round during the school year. On their website, you can find all the information of what is coming to the campus, ranging from standup comedians to lectures to movies. Many of these events boast free or reduced ticket prices for students. A list of the cost and location of each event and a place to purchase tickets are also available online.

Free stuff @ Maryland: www.freestuff.umd.edu

Free stuff @ Maryland is another great place to find a boatload of free events on the campus on its yearly calendar. The events on this site range from lectures to sporting events, even giveaways just for students. New events are added often, so check back periodically.

CSPAC: www.claricesmithcenter.umd.edu

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is one of the best places to see performances on the campus thanks to a range of diverse performances and $9 student tickets. For events that can run the public anywhere from $15 to $45, that’s not a bad deal. If you like seeing live music, dancers or plays, check out the calendar of events on CSPAC’s website. Just remember, there is a two-student ticket limit per student ID.

UM Terps: www.umterps.com

What would this list be without mentioning sports? While all of the Terrapin sports teams have websites, the one cumulative site for university athletics is UM Terps. On there, you can find a calendar of all upcoming sporting events. You can also find the scores of games you’ve missed, as well as links to buy tickets or Terp apparel.

The Washington Post’s Going Out Guide: www.washingtonpost.com/gog

Lastly, for those who want to venture off the campus, either around College Park or into Washington, check out The Post‘s Going Out Guide. It lists editor’s picks and also lets you search to fit your mood — club parties, art exhibitions and free events are just some of the things you can choose.
