Throughout orientation, freshman welcome events and the first few nights out on the town, you might gather tons of new phone numbers — even those of people you’ll never see again. The following numbers, however, will help you navigate the campus and prepare you for a variety of situations you might be faced with as a college student.
University Police (Emergency)
301-405-3333
The emergency phone number for University Police. Calling 911 is fine for emergencies too, but that will connect you with Prince George’s County Police, which deals with off-campus crime in College Park. University Police handles emergencies on the campus and sends out crime alerts, which students can receive through texts and emails.
University Police (Non-Emergency)
301-405-3555
The non-emergency phone number for University Police. Call this number to request a walking escort on the campus so you don’t have to walk alone at night. You can also request a police escort by using a blue-light emergency phone.
DOTS NextBus
301-364-1780
The Department of Transportation Services’ automated NextBus service. You can call the number to find when a bus is coming to a nearby stop, or text “NBUS UMD” and the five-digit code of any DOTS bus stop to 41411 to find out how long you’ll have to wait. This service is also offered online and as a smartphone application.
DOTS Nite Ride
301-314-NITE (6483)
DOTS’ NITE Ride service, which runs between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. seven nights a week. This service picks up students from areas on the campus that aren’t serviced by an evening bus route.
Health Center
301-314-8184
The number to make an appointment at the University Health Center. You can also make appointments for many services at myuhc.umd.edu.
