University Police responded to reports of an assault, an indecent exposure and a burglary, among other incidents, in the past two weeks, according to police reports.

Assault

University Police responded to South Campus Commons 3 March 11 at 2:45 a.m. for a reported assault that took place at 2:36 a.m. Three female University of Maryland students were visiting a friend in the building and began talking to another man who was in the apartment. While the three students were getting up to leave, the man yelled insults at them. He grabbed one of the girls and pushed her, police spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas said. The man then grabbed another one of the girls and shoved her out the door.

Officers searched the area and were unable to locate the man. No injuries were reported, and police are still investigating the incident.

Indecent Exposure

On March 11 at 1:52 a.m., University Police responded to the lobby of their headquarters for a report of indecent exposure. A male university student reported that a man approached him as he waited with a group at a bus stop in front of Montgomery Hall at about 1:47 a.m.

The man initiated a conversation with the student, started an argument with the group and then exposed himself, Hoaas said.

Officers successfully located the man and identified him as William Fallon, 19, from Brightwaters, New York. They charged him with indecent exposure.

Noncriminal Title IX-incident

At 10 p.m. March 12, University Police responded to Xfinity Center, where employees reported that a man unaffiliated with this university made lewd comments to some staff members. Officers were able to locate the individual and determined the comments he made were not criminal in nature.

The police provided the staff worker with information from the Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct. This case is closed.

Burglary

University Police responded to the 3400 block of Tulane Drive March 16 at 10:10 p.m. for a burglary that took place between March 16 at 10 p.m. and March 17 at 12:16 a.m. The person who reported it saw three suspicious people in the laundry room of that building. Police were unable to find the suspects initially and cleared the call.

At 11:39 p.m., the same person notified police that the people had entered the room, damaged a laundry machine and taken money from it. They also damaged a smoke detector in the laundry room.

University Police returned to process the scene for evidence and noticed other officers in that same area while investigating. The officers, from the Hyattsville and the Prince George’s County police departments, received a report from a different person about the same incident. Hyattsville police had detained two of the three suspects, who they determined were the same individuals from the initial report.

University Police arrested the two — Jerry Lamont Fitzgerald, 40, of Capital Heights, and Lawrence Edison Preston, 30, of Upper Marlboro. They face five charges related to burglary, theft and malicious destruction of property.

Fraud

University Police responded to a concessions stand at Xfinity Center March 10 at 11:08 p.m. for a report of a counterfeit bill. A $20 bill someone had used to pay had come back as counterfeit.

Police took possession of the bill and contacted the Secret Service, Hoaas said. It is standard practice for police to involve the Secret Service in cases involving currency.

Vandalism

University Police responded to the area outside Washington Hall March 16 at 4:47 p.m. for a report of vandalism. A witness said he observed an individual kneeling down by a bike rack, where he appeared to be cutting the cable of a bike lock. When the person saw the witness, he fled, Hoaas said.

Officers checked the area and could not locate the suspect. Police submitted a request for area camera footage. This case is still under investigation.
