Randy Edsall coaches the Terps’ offensive line during the Terps’ 32-21 win over the Huskies on Sept. 14, 2013.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — There were plenty of stories entering Saturday night’s matchup between the Terrapins football team and Connecticut. The Terps were an offensive juggernaut in their first two games and were searching for their first 3-0 start since 2001. UConn was coming off a brutal home loss to Towson to open its season.

But one obviously stood above them all: Terps coach Randy Edsall’s return.

I’m not going to rehash the story, since it’s been written about length for more than a year. But it was the focus of much of the media leading up to Saturday’s tilt.

Edsall was asked about his emotions of being back at Rentschler Field and what the night meant to him in the postgame, and he responded at length.

Here’s his answer:

“This is a very special place for me and my family, and I appreciated everything that everybody did for me and did for our family, but did for the program here. When you take a look at what myself and many others who were with me when I was here and what we were able to accomplish here was really something special, and that’s something I’ll never forget and I’ll always be grateful for the fan support, for the backing of the administration and it’s good to come back and have another great memory here at Rentschler Field. But now, it’s on the Maryland sideline, which pleases me tremendously. But these are all things you go with, and like I said, I’ll never lose the memories I’ve had here at Connecticut. Being able to talk to some of those guys that I recruited and coached afterwards, that’s what makes this game so special. It’s not all the stuff you guys want to write about. That’s the stuff that’s what it’s about. I appreciate them coming up and talking to me and I guess I can be the first person to win a game in Rentschler Field as a head coach at UConn and a visting coach, so I established a record there, too. I’m glad that our guys allowed me to do that.”
