Maryland will be well represented on the 2017 U.S. women’s lacrosse national team.
Six former Terps were selected for the preliminary squad Sunday after a three-day tryout at U.S. Lacrosse’s training center in Sparks, Maryland.
Attackers Alex Aust and Brooke Griffin, midfielders Taylor Cummings and Katie Schwarzmann and defenders Megan Douty and Alice Mercer were all named to the 36-player roster. All six were part of the 2016 U.S. National Team.
Team USA will trim the squad to 18 players before it competes for a third consecutive world championship in the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s World Cup in Guildford, England.
Aust and Schwarzmann helped lead Maryland to the 2010 NCAA Championship, while Cummings, Douty, Griffin and Mercer competed for the Terps during their national championship seasons in 2014 and 2015.
Cummings won the past three Tewaaraton awards, given to the top lacrosse player in the nation. She scored 60 goals and notched 19 assists in her final season in College Park.
