The Terrapin gymnastics team is set to take its best record since 1999 on the road.
The Terps are 3-1 so far this season, with all three wins coming at home and the only loss on the road. If the team wants to continue its recent success, they will have to do it away from home, with a four-meet road stand beginning with a quad-meet this Saturday in Morgantown against West Virginia, George Washington and Rutgers.
“We’ve had good home meets, but we’ve also had good away meets,” coach Bob Nelligan said. “Being away is more of an adjustment. [The gymnasts] have a pattern they adhere to all year, but it always changes when you’re on the road.”
West Virginia, who won the East Atlantic Gymnastics League championship last season, is going to be a challenge for the Terps, but they are not worried about the pressure that comes with playing on the road.
“When we’re away, we just go in and try to do our thing,” gymnast Candice King said. “We try not to worry about the other team or the crowd. We just block them out and do what we know we’re capable of doing.”
To go along with the pressure of being on the road, this weekend’s meet has added weight because all the teams are in the EAGL.
“This is probably one of our tougher meets of the season,” co-captain Kelsey Nelligan said. “We’re going against other teams in our conference which is always tricky.”
The Terps are trying to show they belong in the discussion when it comes to the EAGL elite by riding on their current momentum.
“We prepare all week long, and what happens, happens,” Nelligan added. “It wouldn’t make a difference to me whether we were home or away.”
