Zedd performs at the D.C. Armory on October 3, 2015 as a part of his True Colors tour.
Anton Zaslavski, also known as Zedd, was a little more than a month into his True Colors Tour when he brought the massive production set up to the D.C. Armory on Oct. 3. With a stage measuring 82 feet wide (larger than most festival main stages) and LED screens from wall to wall, the True Colors Tour is designed to be an immersive and life-changing experience for those in the audience.
Scheduled to open for Zedd at the Armory were Alex Metric and moombahton master-blaster Dillon Francis, but after Metric’s set finished, DJ Tommy Trash appeared on stage as a secret guest. Tommy Trash’s electro-house set pumped and excited the crowd for the two main headliners.
Dillon Francis took the stage with his typical comedic energy, as images of Danny DeVito and a distorted Chewbacca danced behind him and his familiar 112 beat per minute moombahton songs filled the armory. The set featured plenty of songs off his album Money Sucks, Friends Rule and his recently released EP This Mixtape Is Fire mixed with songs from Skrillex, The Weeknd and the Backstreet Boys. The visuals combined with Francis’ song choices left the audience with one of Francis’ best sets (out of the four I’ve seen).
While previous Dillon Francis sets were fresh in mind, I hadn’t seen Zedd in nearly four years and knew his sound had changed from the harder electro-style he used to create to something many believe to be on a higher level. As the dim armory began to buzz with excitement, the lights brightened and an outline of a figure appeared in the dead center of the massive stage.
The music started almost instantaneously, and with it, the crowd started jumping. The audience was younger than most — there was no age restriction for the event. Despite the massive range in age, the crowd responded perfectly to Zedd’s control of the floor, and they danced, sang and partied their way through the night at his command.
A blast of confetti accompanied nearly every song, stimulating the senses. As Zedd pulled in the reins and ended the show, it became apparent that when Zedd makes a promise, he plans to keep it. With guests like Tommy Trash and Dillon Francis combined with a massive festival-sized stage and lights, the True Colors Tour is one of Zedd’s crowning achievements within his relatively young career.
