A man struck a University of Maryland student with a baseball bat while passing Campus Drive near Stamp Student Union on Friday night, according to a UMD Alert.

University of Maryland Police responded to the Stamp Student Union area at about 10:56 p.m. for an assault involving a baseball bat, the alert read. Two male students were walking along Campus Drive when they got into a verbal altercation with a passing car.

A male passenger got out of the car and began following the students before going back to the car to get a baseball bat, according to the alert.

After exchanging words with the students, the suspect struck one of them. The passenger then got into the car and left the scene, driving toward Route 1, the alert read.

The student who was struck was taken to a local hospital and has been released.

Police have identified the two suspects involved in the incident, and neither are affiliated with this university. Both they were issued a denial of access to the campus, and charges will be filed, according to the alert.
