The Tampa Bay Rays called up former Maryland baseball left-hander Adam Kolarek on Friday, making him the second Terp to appear in MLB this season.

After three years pitching for the Terps, Kolarek was picked by the Mets in the 11th round of the 2010 MLB Draft. He remained in their organization until 2015, when he was released and joined the Rays.

Tampa Bay gave Kolarek his first taste of the big leagues last year; he put up a 6.48 ERA over 8.1 frames during two stints with the team. In his 2018 debut on Friday, he pitched a scoreless fifth inning and picked up a strikeout against the New York Mets.

Kolarek has excelled this season out of the Triple-A Durham Bulls’ bullpen. In 29 appearances and 42.1 innings, he’s posted a 1.70 ERA, striking out 50 batters and walking only 10. As a southpaw, he’s typically asked to retire left-handed hitters, but he’s held his own against righties — they slashed .278/.333/.344 against him in Durham.

The only other former Terp in the majors this year is fellow reliever Brett Cecil, who has a 3.79 ERA in 19 innings for the St. Louis Cardinals. But more could be on the way — second baseman Brandon Lowe and outfielder LaMonte Wade are both hitting well in Triple-A, and right-hander Mike Shawaryn is knocking on the door at Double-A.
