University student Daniel Carlisle Murray, 20, was charged with first degree murder and first degree arson today in the death of senior Michael Scrocca, who died in a Princeton Avenue fire last April, Prince George’s County Police said in a press release.

Murray was arrested on the campus about 9:30 this morning by county police working in cooperation with University Police, the release said.Police received a tip from an anonymous source early last week who told investigators they should question a specific person about the Princeton Avenue fire, said Steve Kerpelman, a private investigator hired by the Scrocca family.

Kerpelman received the same tip, he said.Kerpelman has been working on the case and questioning students in an independent investigation since August and said Murray’s name had never come up. He added that details of Murray’s connection to Scrocca prior to his death remain unknown.

Police would not confirm any details beyond the press release, a police spokeswoman said, but officials will attempt to make investigators available for comment tomorrow.

A full report will appear in tomorrow’s Diamondback.
