The Terrapin softball team travels to Athens, Ga., this weekend to play in the Red and Black Challenge, almost two weeks after its last game. The Terps (1-5) face UNC Greensboro (3-6) and Oakland today at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

Tomorrow, they play Radford (10-11) and host Georgia (10-6). The Terps are coming off a second-place finish in the Crimson Classic, in which Alabama blanked them in the final, 5-0.

The Crimson Classic showed that the team has a bright future with the emergence of sophomore pitcher Abbey Welch and sophomore first baseman Lindsay Klein.

Welch was the winning pitcher in the Terps’ only win of the tournament, posting a complete game and tallying three strikeouts. She allowed only two runs in the victory over Missouri.

Klein was the highlight of the Crimson Classic at the plate, registering seven hits over five games. Her hitting streak is on the line going into the matchup with UNC Greensboro. Klein leads the team with a .438 batting average and .355 on-base percentage.

Senior left fielder Crystal Tweedy, who is hitting a .364, leads the Terps in slugging percentage.

Junior catcher Nikki Smith hit the Terps’ only home run of the season in a 7-1 loss to Penn State.

Sophomore second baseman Keri Lounge hit two doubles in the Crimson Classic.

Senior ace pitcher Jessica Aditays has been unlucky with run support this season, getting one total run in her two starts, both losses. Her record should improve — she has posted a 3.50 ERA — and held opposing batters to a .262 average.

Aditays, Welch and sophomore pitcher Elyse Lucas should all see significant action this weekend.
