University of Maryland Police responded to a reported theft, DWI/DUI and a hate bias incident, among other reports, over the past week.
DWI/ DUI
Police arrested Jose Leon Garcia Garcia, 43, and charged him with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol Nov. 19, University Police spokesperson Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas wrote in an email.
At about 2 a.m. that day, an officer pulled over a gray sedan near Adelphi Road and Tulane Drive for driving without its headlights on. During the stop, the officer smelled alcohol and believed the Hyattsville resident was impaired, Hoaas wrote.
The officer asked Garcia Garcia to perform standardized sobriety tests, but he did not follow them as the officer instructed, she added.
Pedestrian struck
On Nov. 20, a white sedan struck a male student near Regents Drive Parking Garage, Hoaas wrote.
The driver got out of his car to help the pedestrian but did not exchange contact information with him before leaving the scene. The student, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to a nearby hospital.

Hate bias incident
At about midnight on Nov. 19, police responded to a hate bias incident at Elkton Hall.
A resident assistant reported that they found a racist phrase — which included language against black people — scrawled on a bulletin board near the elevators, Hoaas wrote.
On the day of the incident, resident director Ray Nardella sent a letter to the dorm’s residents condemning the racial slur.
“This incident is unacceptable and extremely concerning,” he wrote. “Hateful incidents such as these are appalling and hurt all of us in the community.”
