Coach Jonathan Morgan and the Terps fell short of winning their first ACC title.

After the Terrapins women’s soccer team fell, 1-0, to No. 6 Penn State on Thursday night, it still resided as the final squad in the eight-team Big Ten tournament field.

As it stood, the Terps (5-7-6, 3-5-5) had 14 points. Meanwhile, Ohio State and Northwestern compiled 12 points over the conference season. The Buckeyes and Wildcats had one game remaining, though, while the Terps’ regular season ended with a loss to the Nittany Lions.

And two days later, Northwestern beat Iowa and moved into the eighth place in the standings, which knocked the Terps out of the conference tournament.

The Terps still have a chance to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. But with an RPI of 73 and just five wins, the Terps will likely miss out for the second straight season. Last year, coach Jonathan Morgan’s team finished with 10 wins but did not receive a tournament berth.

If the Terps’ fail to qualify for the postseason, it’ll be because of their inability to score goals. The Terps’ 17 goals were tied for last in the conference, and they did not find the back of the net in their final three games of the regular season.

The NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced next weekend.
