The Terrapins football team successfully lured another in-state star to College Park on Friday when quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. announced his commitment to Maryland.

Haskins, rated the No. 25 overall player in the class of 2016 by ESPN, attends Bullis School, where he made the announcement. The Potomac native is the No. 2 pocket passer in his class, according to ESPN, and the No. 2 player in the state.

With current Terps quarterbacks Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe expected to graduate in 2016, Haskins could compete for the starting job right away, two seasons from now. When Haskins arrives in 2016, he likely will battle Shane Cockerille, who will be a rising junior, and incoming freshman Gage Shaffer, who will be a rising sophomore, for playing time.

While the Terps were the favorites to land Haskins, he also considered Rutgers, Alabama, Florida and Notre Dame, among others.

The four-star recruit becomes the highest-ranked player to join the Terps since wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who was No. 13 in his class, joined the team in 2012. Offensive tackle Damian Prince, who redshirted last season, was ranked No. 26 in the class of 2014.

The 6-foot-3, 203-pound Haskins went 159-for-259 for 1,936 yards and 22 touchdowns while throwing five interceptions as a junior at Bullis.
